Celebrities Who Have Won 9 to 5 Awards
You might not have been able to stop yourself from humming the hit song “9 to 5” when you saw the 1980 movie of the same name. It follows three working women who live out their fantasies of getting even with and overthrowing their company’s “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” boss.
Dolly Parton
In the movie, Dolly Parton plays a secretary who plots with her co-workers to overthrow their sexist and egotistical boss. She also wrote the film’s title song, which became one of her biggest hits. To write the song, Parton used her long acrylic fingernails to simulate the sound of a typewriter.
Throughout her career, Parton has won multiple Grammy awards and has had 25 songs reach the top of the country charts. She’s also appeared in a number of movies, including 9 to 5, Steel Magnolias, Honeysuckle Rose, and Coal Miner’s Daughter.
At the 2020 Billboard Women in Music ceremony, Parton performed ‘9 to 5’ on stage alongside her co-stars from the film Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. She was clad in her sparkly best as she sang the iconic tune to cheering fans. It was a fitting performance to celebrate the achievements of women in the music industry. The song was a huge hit at the time and continues to be today.
Jane Fonda
After studying at Vassar College, Fonda made her acting debut in the 1960 Broadway play There Was a Little Girl and the film Tall Story. Her subsequent work on stage and screen spanned decades, garnering her numerous awards nominations, including two Oscar nods for Klute and On Golden Pond. In the 1970s she became involved in politics, and devised an aerobic exercise program. She also published a workout book that started the fitness craze.
She has also been a prolific director, producer and writer. She starred in the acclaimed Netflix series Grace and Frankie from 2015 to 22, as well as in the 2017 film Our Souls at Night. Currently she is working on a new HBO political drama with Catherine Keener, which will air this fall. Fonda is also an avid hiker, fly fisherwoman and yoga instructor. Her charitable works have focused on youth and education, adolescent reproductive health and the arts. She is an activist on behalf of climate change and supports feminist causes.
Lily Tomlin
Lily Tomlin has long been recognized for her work, including a Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, two Peabody Awards, multiple Emmys (including this year’s lead comedy actress nomination), and both the Crystal and Lucy awards from Women in Film. In addition, she is a tireless advocate for animals, working on behalf of the Shambala Sanctuary and Paws Elephant Sanctuary.
Tomlin first garnered fame as a regular on Laugh-In, and continued to build her career with roles in a number of comedic and dramatic films. Her performance in Robert Altman’s Nashville earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
The actress has since starred on many television shows, most notably the popular series Grace and Frankie, in which she co-starred with Fonda. She has also starred in several Broadway productions, and is the voice of Ms. Frizzle in the Magic School Bus. Tomlin has been nominated for an Oscar nine times, but she has never won the coveted statuette.
